German Junior Folk Dancers

Topporzer Our youth dance group was established in 1998 and performs in and around Saskatoon, including at various summer festivals such as, Canada Day, the Taste of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon's annual 3-day Folkfest. Past performances have also included the Humboldt Sommerfest and many performances in Prince Albert, such as the Tapestrama festival. We have also performed at the newly reinstated Saskatoon German Days for the past few years.

Four years ago we put on our first annual Minifest for children's groups in Saskatoon. It was a great first year, especially with our Playmobil display. For the past few years we've had new groups join us, as well as new and exciting Playmobil displays and contests.

Our folk dancers also accept many other invitations to entertain: At Seniors' Homes, especially around Christmas, the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, the International Day of Dance, and at various conferences or functions with multicultural or German themes.

Zeigt her eure Füße
The German Junior Folk Dancers perform a variety of German folk dances and are always on the lookout for new material.

For the past few years we have been expanding our repertoire of dances. We still perform some lively dances from southern Germany and Austria, such as the "Bayrischer Ländler" and the always popular "Dreisteyrer" and "Drei Lederne Strümpfe". We also perform older German folkdances, such as the "Kinderpolka", "das Fenster", the "Kreuzkönig", and the "Tampet".

The new dances we have added to our repertoire come from different areas in and around Germany, including the German province of Hessen. Some of these dances are the "Dreiertanz", the "Knopfloch", "Hack und Zeh", the "Nickeltanz" and the "Topporzer Kreuzpolka". We are currently working on adding the "Maitanz" or Bändertanz" to our repertoire as well.

Check out our pictures under "Traditions" to see our new northern German dresses.
